A few days had passed, and Kari got up to help Mom with breakfast. When she came down to the kitchen, the aroma of pancakes tickled her nose. “It smells like sweet vanilla and is making me hungry.”
Anna plodded around the table still in her pajamas, holding on to her stuffed tiger. Samuel trailed into the kitchen next with his floppy blond hair. He took a seat and looked half awake.
“Would you finish getting the table ready and go out to the barn to check on Grandpa?” Mom asked as she poured batter in a skillet.
“I will.” Kari got busy setting the table.
Her brother was resting his head on the table. Samuel wasn’t a morning person, and sometimes he could be grumpy until he’d been awake for a while.
“Excuse me, Samuel. I need to put a plate by you. Are you about ready for a pancake?”
“Yep.” He lifted his head and rubbed his eyes.
Mom looked at Kari. “I think most of us got to sleep in this morning except for Daed and me.”
“How come?”
“He needed to hurry to the shop to meet a customer. I barely had his pancake off the skillet and plated before he wolfed it down and left.”
“Sounds like it will be a busy day for him.” Kari set the last cup onto the table.
Mom poured more batter into the pan. “Jah, your father works hard to provide for us.”
“I’ll go check on Grandpa and let him know that it’s time to eat.” Kari left the kitchen.
When she entered the barn, Kari saw Grandpa over by the bags of feed. He sat on a box holding something small. Kari walked closer to see what it was. “Oh, how cute! Marble has brand-new kittens. Look at all of them.”
Grandpa smiled. “She has seven sweet babies, and they all look very healthy.”
Kari stood watching him speak softly to the little kitten. His large, calloused hand stroked the soft baby’s fur. She was amazed how someone so big could be so gentle. She carefully picked up another baby and joined him. Kari couldn’t believe how tiny it was and how adorable too. Marble lay there purring as her young nursed against her.
“We probably need to go get ready for breakfast.” He put the kitten gently near its siblings.
Kari did the same. “Yes, Mom had me come out to get you.”
Heading to the house, she thought about ways to improve her attitude toward Samuel and Anna. Kari wanted to do better at caring for her brother and sister with gentleness and love. Thank You, Lord, for showing me kindness in action today.
